“Let us strive together to make more use of technology to better the education of Africa.”

Leon Manyonho, Developer

HOW WE GOT HERE

Coming from a background where help was all over the place, In 2015, Leon Manyonho, a final year Catholic University in Zimbabwe student, had a passion for helping the disadvantaged girl-child living in children’s homes. His first attempt to give back was to work with a former high school friend working for a Non-Governmental Organization to help spread the word of their existence by creating a free website that would make the children’s home known to well-wishers. Later the same year, he approached two of his friends, one girl who would be the center of the teams’ efforts (as a girl child), and the project failed to take off due to some administrative issues on either side.

In 2016, a year after graduation, the team had no projects, and communication fell off, deteriorating the teams’ bond, and all the members took their separate ways.

Still driven by his passion, and an exciting event in his life later in 2016, he explored ways of being useful at home to help his mother, being unemployed, and with no work experience. He went on to study the shortfalls in the currently existing educational sector across the African content, and his research gave birth to the secret formula of an educational project he would immediately explore.

In late 2017, he fell in love with another children’s care home based in Harare after viewing a shared photo of an abandoned girl-child in one of his friends’ arms social media. Later on, he went on to see the child with his friend and fell in love with another girl child. He linked with two of his friends, including the girl who shared the photo on social media, and again another website project failed. Leon went on to register a startup with a longtime friend in December of 2017.

In April 2018, he applied for the LiquidNEXT offering targeting 15 Startups and 100 Developers to join Microsoft Azure. The application was successful, and Vienoula Inc. won an initially proposed 12-month sponsorship provided by Liquid Telecom (Kenya). The support came in Azure credits and mentorship. This opportunity and recognition were instrumental in the first-ever dream-to-reality trial run of the now “Campus Vienoula” with significant assistance from the Kenyan Liquid and Microsoft Corporation teams.

In April of 2019, he developed a website for the new children’s care home based in Harare with the full financial assistance of a well-wisher come friend in the UK. It was also in the same year that the idea of Campus Vienoula helping the underprivileged access affordable educational resources was born.

After two unfruitful attempts to acquire rights to use one of the world’s most renowned academic institutions’ material in Campus Vienoula in 2017 and 2019 and two fruitless attempts to do the same with another highly recognized African Examinations board in 2018 and 2019, he never gave up his dream. In 2019 one of the most respected content authors granted Vienoula Inc. (creators of Campus Vienoula) the green light to create content based on their syllabus, and this marked the second stage of our exciting journey.

THE CAMPUS VIENOULA MISSION

At Campus Vienoula, empowering women in the technology sector is at the heart of what we do. We endeavor to use this approach to bridge the gap of the so-called “A/B/C class scholars” by providing a unique platform to access high-quality educational material. We believe all learners deserve the right to high-quality education regardless of financial backgrounds.

We aim to create and provide more desirable learning possibilities for learners by providing a platform where they can put their smart devices and time to more productive use. We aspire to help grown-ups who have to take classes and are shy as well as learners with mobile disabilities to revisit courses without leaving their comfort zones.

We vow to make a substantial effort to collaborate with the best minds, who have proven track records in assisting a large-scale range of learners, home-schooled, or those who attend conventional institutions.

We strongly believe more work is needed to revolutionalize the African educational sector, and Campus Vienoula has taken one of the many steps necessary in assisting in the generation of ‘A’ grade scholars, notwithstanding the institution one attended.
